The Warning Signs of Cancer in Pets

Cancer is a frightening diagnosis for any pet owner to receive. Unfortunately, cancer is all too common in both dogs and cats. The good news is that, with early detection and treatment, many pets can go on to live long and happy lives. That's why it's so important to be aware of the warning signs of cancer in pets. Read on to learn more.

Lumps and Bumps

One of the most common warning signs of cancer in pets is the presence of lumps or bumps under the skin. Of course, not all lumps or bumps are cause for concern—if you've ever felt your dog's or cat's ribs, you know that they have quite a few bumps under their fur! However, if you feel a lump or bump that seems out of place, or that doesn't go away after a week or two, it's worth taking your pet to the vet for an examination.

Sores that Don't Heal

If your pet has a sore or wound that doesn't seem to be healing—or if it heals and then reopens—this could also be a sign of cancer. Again, it's always best to err on the side of caution and take your pet to the vet for an evaluation.

Weight Loss

Unexplained weight loss can be another sign of cancer in pets. If your dog or cat is eating and drinking normally but losing weight, this could indicate that something is wrong. Weight loss can also be accompanied by a decrease in appetite, so keep an eye out for changes in your pet's eating habits as well.

Changes in Bathroom Habits

Cancer can also affect your pet's bathroom habits. If you notice that your dog is urinating more frequently or straining to defecate, this could be a sign that something is wrong. Blood in the urine or stool is another cause for concern. As always, if you notice any changes in your pet's bathroom habits, it's best to bring them to Country Club Veterinary Clinic for an exam.

Cancer is a scary diagnosis for anyone—human or animal—to receive.
